No Choke May
Here's an idea - go the entire month of May without submitting an opponent with a choke. I can't take credit for coining the phrase, that honor goes to Jerad, but the concept is not new.
I have my list of go-to-moves that I always seem to fall back on. Sometimes I have to check myself and consciously make a decision to not go with the same routine. I'll purposefully pass on a submission just to force myself to work outside of my comfort zone in order to broaden my game.
I was talking with Jerad about this when he threw out that this month was "No Choke May." Some of his grappling partners had figured it out, so weren't even protecting against chokes. While grappling on Monday night, Jerad encircled his partner's neck. That drew the following exclamation, "Hey, I thought you weren't choking anyone this month." Jerad's response was that his opponent didn't tap to it. He never said he wasn't going to threaten with a choke, he simply wasn't going to work it for a submission.
A lot of you may already have thought about this or even done something like this. For those of you who haven't and might be thinking about expanding your game, you might try something like this. I've never banned a submission for an entire month, but you might try at least some variation of this concept.
