I don’t like Judo. There, I said it…let the chips fall where they may! Oh, I appreciate Judo, I enjoy watching it, I just don’t like to do it. I gave it a fair shot, but it’s not for me. I don’t have a problem with throwing, I just don’t want to get back up off of the mat once I’m down there. That’s why I train Jiu-Jitsu instead.Luckily, I am not given a choice in the matter. They force me to do it on a regular basis in Karate, and on “throwing Fridays” in womens Jiu-Jitsu class. I say luckily because, even though I don’t like it, I understand the need for it. I will never be a Judoka, but I can learn to use those tools to my advantage. Having an understanding of stand-up kuzushi is a useful attribute no matter what you train, or what you are training for.
So, for those of you who aren’t lucky enough to have the opportunity to regularly practice Judo outside of Judo class, I would recommend that you try to make it to Judo at least occasionally. Even if you never learn to successfully throw someone, you will definitely learn something about how to defend against a takedown. And if you are able to learn even one throw, that is one more weapon in your arsenal.

Gina, you're admitting what most will say in one on one conversation, but don't want to mention elsewhere. Well done. Judo takes a serious toll on the body.
Very important stuff, but not easy to get in to.
As long as Sensei Beggs doesn't read this, I think I'm okay :-)
LOL, the article I was going to get around to writing eventually. I'm in the Judo Club at UNL and I love it. It's a lot of fun, but it does take a toll on your body. A lot of people I know that have been doing it for awhile have broken just about every finger / toe they have and have some kind of constant, nagging injury that bothers them. However, it's important stuff to know, it's much better than pulling guard every time :-)
Maybe I should take some judo classes since my take downs suck so bad! ;) We have a blue belt at our school who is also a black belt in judo. His style at tournaments is really different from everyone else's. His takedowns are pretty awesome.
It's also important to know how to take a fall. Fall wrong and you could get messed up. It really helps for when winter is coming around and the sidewalks are covered with ice.
