On September 26th, I had the honor of refereeing at the 11th Best of the Best BJJ ProAms held in Omaha, NE. Mr. Dana Taylor, the tournament director and Mr. Anthony Carlson, the tournament head referee (both from Mid-America Martial Arts) were gracious enough to welcome me into the fold. Anthony went out of his way beforehand to meet with me and my class to bring me up to speed on refereeing. Thank you Anthony! This is a new direction for me in my Jiu-Jitsu quest. Of course nothing will change in terms of my regular teaching and learning. Working with the tournament is simply another aspect of the big picture, and I’m excited to be a part of it.
Over the years, my students and I have been to various tournaments and competitions throughout the Midwest, some of them good, some of them kind of shabby. I can honestly say that Dana has done a superior job in maintaining and building this tournament, establishing it as a staple for competitive Jiu-Jitsu fighters and submission grapplers in the Midwest. It has grown considerably since its humble beginning four years ago. The vision for the future is just as exciting.

Conan, you dog! I had no idea that you were going up to ref. I would have went up just to watch you in the black and white bars. This is a great win for all, the BOTB tourney will greatly benefit from your many years of knowledge and your eye for the sport. Good show sir, good show!
Thanks for the vote of confidence, brother.
Conan is like Simon Cowell when it comes to reffing.
He once reffed one of my matches. I barely won.
The judges then gave me scores.
Paula said, "That was awesome Brent. You have potential!"
Randy said, "Way to go, dog!"
Then Conan offered, with that sickening British accent, his input. He said, "Brett, or whatever your name is, that was the worst jiu-jitsu performance I have ever seen. As a grappler you are pathetic!"
I then choked him out! He claims to not remember the incident. Must have been choked-induced amnesia.
That's pretty funny, Brett.
