Commercializing Jiu-Jitsu

In my work I do a lot of critiques of popular culture. In other words, I'm very leery of it. However, having a passion for the art, its hard not to be a bit moved by this advertisement. We've been discussing Jiu-Jitsu in popular culture a bit the last couple weeks. Maybe it won't be long before we see a Nike commercial similar to this, advertising their line of gis and jits training apparel. Just think, maybe sometime in the future you'll go to the mall to get a new gi at Footlocker.

you changed my border again. i knew it was you! i used the crazy pink as a trap to see if it was in fact you or if i was delusional.

I don't believe a word of it. You're color blind and still delusional.

Good stuff Brent, I think we are headed in the direction of marketing MMA, not specifically Jiu-Jitsu, at least in the US. I mean look at Affliction and Tapout. Companies are realizing that the demographic is changing and that the, as Dana White puts it, and I quote, "White male, 18-36 years old" is looking to attach themselves to a more aggressive sport. Much like the case with music of all other generations, that is society's worth. We are ever evolving. Anyway, I am rambling, I can definately see Nike or Underarmor doing MMAware in the near future.

Love that video. It has some sweet workout stuff in there too. I might have to try some of those.

I can definitely see places like Foot Locker carrying gi's and other MMA equipment. In fact, I think it's already in the beginning phases. Every trendy store for guys 18-35 carries Affliction and Tapout, and I see it all over the place on UNL campus and downtown on the weekends. Scheels sells UFC gloves, and there are MMA places popping up all over the place. I've never been a big fan of any of this mainstream stuff. I think it's cool if guys who actually in martial arts wear this stuff, but it's annoying to me to see guys wearing Tapout apparel when it's obvious to me that they don't train. To me, that just says "I wish I were a tough guy." Just my 2 cents.

i'm one of those guys. i've given up on getting an affliction shirt, they're a ripoff.
i look forward to getting one of our jiu jitsu fighter shirts!

I like the look of that ad. I've been sick and tired of the old brutal bloodsport angle that MMA seemed to pick up early on. It'd be awesome to pick up a nike gi - it would really show how far things have evolved.

To me, it's only a matter of time before people shed their preconceived notions and find how enjoyable jujitsu/mma really is - even if they never set foot in a cage.

I hope we never see a Nike blackbelt. I can see little kids wearing them because of the Nike logo. That was a cool video. Is he a MMA fighter?

Andre Galvao is most well know for his Jiu-Jitsu. He's a seven time world Jiu-Jitsu champion. He just had his MMA debut a couple of months ago at a California show and won by armbar.
