Ido Pariente

Shihan taught our class this afternoon. For me, it's always a great inspiration and a great learning opportunity when he's on the mat. The throwing fundamentals he went over are the true building blocks to many different throws. As Shihan put it, you could change your hand position or foot position just a little and have forty or more different techniques. Every one was very attentive and gave 100%. The way I see it is that when Shihan teaches, you get the real deal, straight from the source.

He talked about Ido Pariente, which I think had a lot to do with what he taught today. You could tell that Ido holds a special place in his heart and Shihan was affected by Ido's loss on The Ultimate Fighter.

I know I've talked about how our class got started back in the day, but I'd like to shed a new light on it to look at it from a different perspective. I'd first like to say that Shihan was probably one of the first true mixed martial artists. With his accomplishments in boxing, Judo, Karate and various other disciplines, he has what one would consider to be the necessary skills. When Ido decided he wanted to be a MMA fighter, Shihan began training him, and our class was born. Shihan utilized his combined skills and knowledge through our class to build MMA fighters.

Over the years we've evolved, and since I'm not a MMA fighter, the class has been focused on Jiu-Jitsu.

Shihan has always talked about the importance of being well rounded. He encourages his students to cross-train in multiple disciplines. He's well known for taking his Karate classes onto the mat to teach them Judo or Aikido. Such as he did with us this afternoon when he introduced a short boxing lesson. Years ago, this would have been just a normal part of the class. I was glad to hear the positive comments from our students afterward.

I know Shihan is excited about the prospect of Ido returning to train with us for a couple of weeks. I am as well. If you haven't had a chance to see Ido's training and competition videos, you can check them out on his MySpace page, and on YouTube. He's the real deal!

Shihan talked about finding a way to get Ido here. Although he didn't come right out and say this, it sounds like some of us might be throwing in some spare change to help offset some of Ido's travel expenses. Although I've never met Ido, I think I'd like to. I'll be bringing in my spare change jar to start it off.

I'd love to train with Ido. I'm kind of interested in giving mma competition a shot. Somebody should start an mma class in our school. I would difinitely take the class.
